Timothy Adler writes for SmallBusiness.co.uk that over one third of businesses in the UK say they are struggling to fill vacant jobs, according to the country’s Office for National Statistics.

Right now there are 1.3m job vacancies in the UK – the highest number since comparable figures began being recorded in 2001. That is a 62 per cent increase in job vacancies since the pandemic.

Following Brext, there are now the same number of job vacancies in the UK as there are unemployed people, only the second time in history that this has ever happened.

As a result, the UK is set for the slowest growth out of the G7 world’s richest nations, according to the IMF, expected to be just 0.5 per cent in 2023 compared with the 2.3 per cent previously forecast only in April.

Brexit is partially to blame for travel chaos by keeping out foreign workers, an aviation chief said yesterday, according to the Daily Mail.

Philipp Joeinig, boss of Menzies Aviation, which provides check-in and baggage handling services to major airlines, said the staff shortages crippling the industry were ‘predictable and preventable’.

He added a recruitment crisis had been sparked by Brexit and aviation workers should now be added to the shortage occupation list to alleviate pressure.

According to RollOnFriday, Freshfields is moving a large chunk of its operations to Eastern Europe.

A source told RollOnFriday that under the firm’s “modernise” programme, Freshfields is planning to relocate most of its back office work to Eastern Europe. Although some of that work will be retained in its Manchester base.

The Magic Circle firm has used PwC management consultants to advise on the move, said the insider, while Freshfields Global Head of Shared Services is spearheading the project.

Freshfields set up its low-cost office in Manchester in 2015, when it moved the majority of its UK support team and back office operations out of London. The northern hub also takes on certain types of legal work.

The firm would neither confirm or deny whether it was planning to offshore, onshore or nearshore its operations.
